SBM Offshore secures $465 million project financing for FSO Chalchi

SBM Offshore has signed $465 million of project financing for the newbuild FSO Chalchi. Funding from international banks and institutional investors, with partial insurance from China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation, will be drawn during construction and become non-recourse after operations begin. The Suezmax-based unit is intended for the Trion field offshore Mexico under 20-year lease-and-operate contracts with Woodside Energy through its Mexican affiliate.

Confirmed: SBM Offshore signed $465 million of project financing for FSO Chalchi. The financing combines international bank and institutional capital with partial export-credit insurance, has a maximum tenor of approximately 14 years after completion and is scheduled to become non-recourse once the FSO begins operating. FSO Chalchi remains under construction for deployment at the Trion field under 20-year lease-and-operate contracts with Woodside Energy through its Mexican affiliate. The unit will have approximately 950,000 barrels of storage capacity and a disconnectable turret mooring system for operation in about 2,500 meters of water.

Interpretation: Closing construction-period funding reduces a significant financing risk for the asset and supports SBM Offshore's long-duration lease model. The mix of commercial banks, institutional investors and export-credit support could provide a repeatable funding structure for future lease-and-operate projects, although that potential is management's stated view rather than a committed financing program. Conversion to non-recourse status remains conditional on the FSO starting operations. Extracted contractual and project relationships remain subject to analyst review and are not database-verified.
