PTTEP redeploys Jakrawan K platform in Thailand’s first full wellhead platform reuse
PTTEP has relocated and reinstalled the complete Jakrawan K wellhead platform in the Funan field, cutting the execution period to six months and construction costs by an estimated 35–50% compared with a newbuild. The operator plans to apply the reuse model to about 10 additional platforms during 2027–2029.
PTTEP has completed what it describes as Thailand’s first reuse of an entire offshore wellhead platform, redeploying the Jakrawan K structure within the Funan field under the G1/61 Project.
The topside, jacket and selected pile sections were relocated and reinstalled as a complete structure. According to PTTEP, the work reduced the construction and installation period from about 20 months for a new platform to six months, a reduction of roughly 70%. The company estimated that the approach also lowered construction costs by 35–50%.
PTTEP used a wet-tow method to move the jacket. It said this reduced energy consumption and limited disturbance to marine life attached to the structure. Avoiding the steel and other equipment required for a replacement platform is expected to prevent approximately 3,270 tonnes of carbon-dioxide-equivalent emissions per platform.
The project demonstrates a potential alternative to immediate disposal of structurally sound late-life offshore infrastructure. PTTEP said it expects to reuse approximately 10 additional wellhead platforms that pass structural and safety assessments between 2027 and 2029, potentially creating a continuing requirement for engineering, inspection, transportation and offshore reinstallation services. The release did not identify contractors for the completed work or planned program.
