MODEC and Eld Energy Plan 1.2 MW Fuel-Cell and Carbon-Capture Power System for FPSOs

MODEC and Eld Energy have signed an MOU covering development of a 1.2 MW solid-oxide fuel-cell power system integrated with carbon capture for future FPSO applications. Eld Energy is expected to lead power-system design, procurement, construction and validation, while MODEC will develop the carbon-capture facility and FPSO system integration. Onshore testing is targeted for 2029, followed by a long-term demonstration.

Confirmed development: MODEC and Eld Energy signed an MOU to advance a 1.2 MW power system combining solid oxide fuel cells with carbon capture for FPSO applications. The stated work split assigns design, procurement, construction, testing and validation of the SOFC-based power system to Eld Energy, while MODEC will develop the carbon-capture facility and integrate the combined system into an FPSO configuration. The partners target onshore testing in 2029, followed by long-term demonstration.

The program represents a scale-up from collaboration underway since 2025, including work progressing from 40 kW to a 120 kW SOFC and carbon-capture pilot. Analyst interpretation: moving to megawatt scale could provide an important validation step toward reducing emissions from FPSO onboard power generation, but the technology remains in development. The MOU is not a commercial FPSO equipment award, and the source does not identify a host FPSO, field, customer, deployment date or offshore installation commitment. The extracted MODEC–Eld Energy relationships are source-supported but remain subject to analyst review rather than database verification.
