Alexandre de Gusmão FPSO reaches 180,000 bpd production plateau at Mero

The Alexandre de Gusmão FPSO has reached its designed production plateau of 180,000 barrels of oil per day at the Mero field in Brazil’s pre-salt Santos Basin, Petrobras said. It is the fifth production unit installed at Mero, which Petrobras identifies as Brazil’s third-largest producing field after Búzios and Tupi.

The FPSO is chartered from SBM Offshore and is initially planned to connect to 12 wells: six oil producers and six wells alternating between water and gas injection. Five producers and three injectors are currently connected, leaving four of the initial well connections still to be completed.

Petrobras reported that Mero averaged about 740,000 barrels per day during the second quarter of 2026, before Alexandre de Gusmão reached plateau. The field’s other operating units are Pioneiro de Libra, Guanabara, Sepetiba and Marechal Duque de Caxias.

Mero also hosts a permanent reservoir monitoring system built around a subsea network of optical sensors and instruments. Petrobras said the field is expected to receive its HISEP high-pressure separation technology, which remains under qualification and is designed to separate produced oil from CO₂-rich associated gas subsea so the gas can be reinjected directly into the reservoir.
